Women’s Basketball | July 13

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team ranks seventh in Division I in team grade point average as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its 2020-21 Women’s Basketball Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll on Tuesday.

The Huskies recorded a 3.739 cumulative team GPA for the 2020-21 academic year. This is the third consecutive season NIU has appeared on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, tying for 11th in 2020.

“I am so proud of our players and their commitment to their academics,” said head coach Lisa Carlsen. “With all the adversity they faced this year, they stayed consistent with their efforts in the classroom. This is a great honor for our players as well as our coaches, our academic support staff and all who support our student-athletes. This group is a great example of what it takes to be a STUDENT-athlete.”

NIU had seven student-athletes selected to the 2020-21 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball Team this season, marking the fourth consecutive year NIU had at least six Academic All-MAC honorees. Redshirt-Junior guard Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) was both MAC Sixth Player of the Year and an Academic All-MAC pick with a 4.0 GPA. Poisson led the conference in three-point field goal percentage at 45.1 percent which was ninth-best in the nation. Sophomore guard Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) added an Academic All-MAC honor to her All-MAC Second Team selection. Koker led NIU in scoring this past season with 21.1 points per game and the MAC in free throw percentage at 89.4 percent.

The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and two-year college women’s basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season.
