FAIRMONT — Martin County Commissioners heard from County Engineer Kevin Peyman on Tuesday, who gave a brief update on county roads and bridges.
“We are working on our maintenance gravel, most of which should actually be done today,” he said. “The exception to that is kind of the southwest corner of the county. It’s been a good year for getting things done for us.
“We’re also doing survey work and doing bridge inspections. All the bridges in the county, there’s 182 of them, have to get inspected either every year or every other year so that takes time.
“It’s actually been a good year for bridge inspections because some of the bigger issues that you usually have is timber piles right at the waterline where you can’t always see those. With the water being low we’ve been able to see some areas of the bridges that we can’t always see.”
Commissioner Kathy Smith inquired about the state of the county’s campground sites over the summer months.
“I would say they’ve been pretty much full on the holiday weekends, but it’s not quite full on the other weekends. Sometimes they are off and on but the revenue, which is kind of a rough gauge on how full they are, is right on par. I would say they’re doing well, there’s been some busy weekends and some not as busy weekends.”
In other news, the board received a brief update on the courthouse dome project. County Coordinator Scott Higgins shared that scaffolding for the project will begin coming down during the last full week of August, while scaffolding for the roof project will be going up around the same time. The tarps will also be coming down next week and the dome will then be visible. The public is also invited to come view the reconditioned tower clock mechanism on August 23. The mechanism will then be installed the next day.
In other action, the board:
— Approved the hiring of Jay Slater as a part-time Corrections Officer for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, effective August 18.
— Approved the hiring of Destiney Rainville as Head Communications Officer for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, effective August 29.
— Approved and authorized recruitment to fill the vacancy of Communications officer for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
— Approved the hiring of Maren Malakowsky as the Children’s and Young Adult Librarian for the Martin County Library.
