Rated: Every away shirt for the Premier League 2021-22 season – The Athletic

The Premier League season is under way, but before we go on there are a few things we simply must take care of first. At the weekend, we saw plenty more top-flight teams parade around the place in their brand new, box-fresh away kits.

And we can’t let that go without passing judgement. So here, in far too much detail just like our assessment of the home shirts, are the 2021-22 Premier League away shirts — rated.

Arsenal

Arsenal/Adidas seem to have nailed the “modern interpretation of an old classic” genre — their new version of the old “bruised banana” last season was a triumph and, similarly, their third top this season is what happens when you stick their blue away shirt from 1995 through a TikTok filter.

That probably sounds like an insult, but given how it’s turned out it very much isn’t. The official away shirt is fine, if a bit bland; it’s a yellow and dark blue version of the current Adidas template design, but you suspect they might find as many excuses as possible to go blue over yellow when there’s a clash with their home shirt this season.

Aston Villa

Oh, lovely. Generally speaking, kit designers think about how good a shirt will look with jeans and on fans as much as with shorts on players, but this is one of those kits that really works as a set.

The maroon shorts go delightfully with the trim on the white shirt and match up with the little details too, from the small chevron on the collar to the hints of pale blue on the trim.
