Sports Betting in New York

Retail sports betting has been legal in the state of New York since 2013, however the same cannot be said for online sports wagering, which is yet to be legalized despite physical betting being allowed for some time.

This shouldn’t be the case for much longer, with online sports betting expected to be fully up-and-running in the empire state long before Super Bowl 2022 in February, with users set to be given the chance to wager on the likes of NFL and NBA games online before then.

Andrew Cuomo signed a legislative bill in April to guarantee that mobile sports betting will be introduced to New York at some point in the near future, with the inner workings of this now lying in the hands of the New York Gaming Commission.

BetRivers, FanDuel, DraftKings and Resorts are the main sportsbooks that are currently open in NY.  However you are only able to access these via certain casinos, all of which are some distance away from New York City.

Sports betting is legal in certain retail premises in the state of New York. Online sports wagering will soon be available, but has still yet to be introduced to the Empire State.

How many sportsbooks will be available in New York?

At present, there are as many as eight retail sportsbooks available for you to wager with in NY, with this number expected to increase massively once online sports betting is legalized within the state.

It’s unknown as to how many will eventually be allowed to open their doors to New York residents.  However the likes of BetMGM, bet365 and Caesars are all expected to submit bids to become platform providers in the very near future.

Both Pennsylvania and New Jersey were some of the first states to introduce online betting in the US, with these two the only neighboring states to New York that have it available at this time.

Potential New York online sports betting sites

As stated before, there are already a number of retail sportsbooks in operation in New York, but these are all only available in retail form, with no online sportsbook currently available as of yet.

Competition for licenses in New York is set to be rife when they finally open their doors to online sports wagering, with the likes of DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM all set to be competing against each other.

With this in mind, we’re here to go over some of these sportsbooks and let New Yorkers know exactly what they’re in for when these sports betting sites eventually introduce themselves.

bet365

bet365 are one of the most famous sportsbooks that are expected to jump at the chance to open business in New York, with the sportsbook already live in neighboring state New Jersey.

Given the fact that bet365 are currently live in NJ, they shouldn’t have any trouble launching proceedings in New York when the time comes.

BetMGM

BetMGM boasts one of the best sportsbooks out there, with NY residents set to be able to enjoy all they have to offer when the sportsbook launches their attempts to go live in the state when they’re able to.

As many as 11 US states already have BetMGM live in their state, thus it’ll be very surprising should they fail to launch their online betting site in New York once it’s allowed.

BetRivers

The likes of Pennsylvania and Michigan already have BetRivers live in their state, with seven more states also allowing their residents to use BetRivers’ platform at this point in time.

They’re linked with the likes of SugarHouse in states such as New Jersey, with BetRivers seemingly getting the backing needed to launch in New York when they can.

Caesars

Caesars recently took over one of the most famous sportsbooks in the US with their recent acquisition of William Hill, a sportsbook that was live in a number of states before being rebranded to Caesars.

Given this, New Yorkers should expect to see Caesars become one of the first sportsbooks to launch in the states when the time comes.

DraftKings

DraftKings already has a retail sportsbook available in the empire state, with this being located in one of the state’s only casinos.

With this in mind, DraftKings looks certain to gain approval and launch their online betting platform once online sports betting is launched in NY.

FanDuel

FanDuel, much like DraftKings, are already active in NY in the form of a retail sportsbook in one of the state’s few casinos, thus they already have a headstart over their competitors when it comes to launching their online sports betting platform.

Taking this into account, FanDuel should be one of the first to go live online when online sports betting is allowed in New York.

PointsBet

PointsBet are live in seven states, with three more expected to be added to this list in the near future, with New York also set to be a potential new home for the sportsbook in the future.

They’ve had no trouble launching in any state thus far, and given they’re set to be live in a total of 10 states over the next few months, expect them to add New York to the growing list of states they’re live in.

Are New York Retail Sportbooks operational?

At this moment in time, New York has a number of retail sportsbooks available for residents of the empire state to take advantage of, however all of these are some distance away from New York City.

Operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel and BetRivers all have sportsbooks located at specific casinos throughout the state, with these casinos, as well as others, being the only places in which you are able to legally wager on sports in NY.

Latest New York Sports Betting News

New York is slowly but surely getting ready to launch online sports betting throughout the state after former Gov, Andrew Cuomo, who resigned earlier this month, put forward a bill that will see online sports wagering introduced to New York at some point in the future, with a date for this introduction not yet agreed upon.

A number of sportsbooks have already put their names into the hat to secure a license to open up in the state, with the likes of BetMGM and bet365 expected to join them in the near future.

Retail sports wagering is currently available in select venues across the state, with online betting expected to be introduced in time for Super Bowl 2022, which takes place February 6th next year.

New York Sports Betting History

Back in 2013, New York opened up to the idea of introducing gambling to the Empire state, as they legalized commercial casinos across the state, with this allowing tribal casinos to allow sports betting in select venues, with the first sportsbooks then opening in 2019.

Sports betting was originally only allowed in four casinos across the whole of New York state, with as many as seven currently available for residents to gamble in, whether that be sports or casino games.

They currently do not offer online sports betting of any kind as it is not legal in the state, however this looks set to change in the near future as the empire state opens up to the idea of sports betting as a whole.

A recent bill has been approved by New York’s former governor Andrew Cuomo, something which will lead to online sports betting being introduced to the state in the coming months.

Given this, expect a lot more sportsbooks to become available in New York in the not-too-distant future, as the likes of BetMGM and Caesars look to open their doors to all empire state residents once allowed to do so.

New York Sports Teams to bet on

New York boasts one of the largest ranges of sports teams to bet on, with the likes of the Brooklyn Nets, the New York Giants, New York Jets and New York Islanders just some of the high-profile teams in the Big Apple.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets are currently favorites to win the NBA Championship next year given they boast the likes of Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving.

Given the NBA season only just finished last month, you’ll have to wait until October to see the Nets in action again, with you being able to bet on them to win the NBA title, Eastern Conference and reach the NBA finals in the meantime.

New York Islanders

The Islanders fared well in the NHL last year, reaching the semi-finals of the playoffs, where they were eventually sent home by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The new NHL season doesn’t get underway for some months, however in the meantime, you can wager your money on the Islanders to win the Stanley Cup, the East Division, as well as New York to reach the finals and achieve over or under a certain number of wins.

New York Rangers

The Islanders got the bragging rights over the Rangers last season, as New York narrowly missed out on the playoffs, with their local rivals taking their place.

As already stated, the new NHL campaign doesn’t get started until October, however you can still bet on some Rangers-related futures markets in the meantime, such as New York to win the Stanley Cup, whether they’ll make the playoffs or not, as well as whether the Rangers will finish above or below the Islanders.

New York Yankees

The current MLB season is in full-swing, with the playoffs set to get underway later in the year, with the Yankees turning around a horrid start to the season to get their campaign back on track in the run-up to the end of the regular season.

Given this, you can bet on every single one of the Yankees’ games until the end of their season, as well as New York to win the AL East and World Series, as well as them to make the playoffs.

New York Mets

The Mets started this season great, however their recent form has seen them relinquish top spot in the NL East, with this being taken up by the Philadelphia Phillies.

As we approach the latter end of the season, you can still wager on the Mets to win the World Series and NL East, as well as whether or not they’ll make the playoffs, with every single one of their remaining games also available for you to wager on.

New York Jets

With the NFL season getting underway in a matter of weeks, the hype for the new football season is growing more and more each day, however given their displays last year, Jets fans shouldn’t be expecting too much this term.

Nevertheless you can still bet on the Jets to win the Super Bowl and the AFC East, whether or not they make the playoffs, as well as the number of wins they pick up amongst other markets.

New York Giants

The Giants fared slightly better than their local rivals last year, however they did only manage six wins, a total they’ll of course be looking to usurp when the new season kicks off in September.

Given this, markets such as ‘Giants to win the Super Bowl’ and ‘Giants to win the NFC East’ will be available, as well as markets allowing you to bet on how many wins they achieve and whether they make the postseason or not available.
