LONDON—Among the many arcane rules that still govern English soccer, the most frustrating for fans remains the decades-old decree that governs games on Saturdays at 3 p.m. In order to protect attendance at stadiums around the country, matches in that traditional time slot cannot be shown on U.K. television.
The result was that broadcasters and the Premier League coordinated to bump marquee teams out of the blackout and into windows all over the weekend—at least most of the time. This past weekend marked an exception. The top three teams in the standings all kicked off in Saturday 3 p.m. matches for the first time in four years, out of legal sight to anyone in Britain who wasn’t inside the stadiums.
