World Series score: Astros vs. Braves live updates for Game 1 as Fall Classic kicks off in Houston – CBS sports.com

The 2021 World Series kicked off Tuesday night with Game 1 between the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves at Minute Maid Park. The Astros beat the White Sox in the ALDS and the Red Sox in the ALCS to punch their ticket to the World Series. The Braves had to go through the Brewers in the NLDS and the Dodgers in the NLCS. Here’s how you can watch Game 1.

Atlanta got off to a quick start in Game 1 thanks to Jorge Soler. He hit Framber Valdez’s third pitch into the Crawford Boxes for a leadoff home run. Soler is the first player in history to lead off Game 1 of the World Series with a home run. The Braves added a second run later in the first inning on Austin Riley’s double into the left-center field gap. Ozzie Albies beat out an infield single and stole second base to set that second run up.

For the Astros, this is their third trip to the World Series in the last five years. They beat the Dodgers in the 2017 Fall Classic before losing to the Nationals in 2019. The Braves are in the World Series for the first time since 1999 and they’re riding an eight-game World Series losing streak. It is tied for the longest in history.

The Braves sent Charlie Morton (14-6, 3.34 ERA) to the mound against his former club in Game 1. Morton is the sixth pitcher in history to start both for and against a team in the World Series, joining Al Downing (Dodgers), Don Gullett (Yankees), Tommy John (Dodgers and Yankees), Denny Neagle (Yankees), and Bob Welch (Dodgers).

Houston countered with Valdez (11-6, 3.14 ERA), whose eight-inning masterpiece in ALCS Game 5 is arguably the best-pitched game of the postseason to date. Here is everything you need to know about the Morton vs. Valdez pitching matchup.
